Be part of this once-in-a-lifetime trek to Everest Base Camp to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Sir Ed's ascent of Everest

 

The Himalayan Trust and Kathmandu Summit Club invite you to join this once-in-a-lifetime trek to reach Everest Base Camp on May 29, 2018, the 65th anniversary of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mt Everest.

This 19-day adventure (18 May – 5 June 2018) to Everest Base Camp – a unique opportunity to visit and volunteer on Himalayan Trust projects and experience the stunning scenery and warm hospitality of the Solukhumbu.

  • Arrive at Everest Base Camp on 29 May 2018 – 65 years after Ed and Tenzing reached the summit.
  • Climb Kala Pattar (5545m) for spectacular views of Everest and the surrounding peaks.
  • Go off the beaten track and immerse yourself in local life as you spend two days volunteering with the community in Chaurikharka, assisting teachers in the classroom and helping with the construction of the Musey Drinking Water system.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Himalayan Trust’s work from Michael Riach, our Education Programme Manager, who will join you for the first few days of your trek.
  • Visit Khumjung School, Sir Ed’s first humanitarian project in Nepal, where the Himalayan Trust is currently rebuilding classrooms that were damaged in the 2015 earthquakes.
  • Visit the famous Khunde Hospital, which Sir Ed built in 1966, and enjoy a special dinner with the Nepali medical team and other key community figures.
  • Explore bustling Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa “capital” of Nepal and visit Thyangboche Monastery, where the 1953 Everest expedition camped before the summit attempts.
  • Soak up the legendary warmth of the Sherpa people, which drew Sir Ed back to this region time after time.
  • You’ll be supporting the Himalayan Trust’s life-changing work with the communities of the Solukhumbu by raising or donating $600. We’ll provide you with all the support you need to make your fundraising fun and simple.

Dates, cost and fitness level

Dates: 18 May – 5 June 2018

Cost: $3,390 from Kathmandu, plus minimum $600 donation or fundraising payable to the Himalayan Trust one month prior to departure. 

Fitness level: This trip involves trekking for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace, carrying a day pack.  You will need a good level of fitness and to be in good health.
